A Christmas in Harlem is back again, and Part 4 of this annual extravaganza promises to be the best one yet. Culturocity was there in 2013 for the inaugural Christmas in Harlem at Urban Roots, which, unfortunately, is no longer in our midst. Nonetheless, I thought I’d reminisce a bit with a throwback photo from A Christmas in Harlem Part 1, courtesy of So Focus Photos.
The Harlem Renaissance-themed event has been brought to Oklahoma City each year since 2013 by promoter extraordinaire David Threatt. The venue has changed over the years, but the event’s 1920’s Harlem-era essence remains very much intact. Last year’s event was held at La Brasa/Kamp’s, and although the event was highly successful, it required some creative logistical maneuvering on Threatt’s part, due to the unexpected twist of sharing the venue with another gathering being held concurrently. This time around, there are no such concerns: The game has been completely changed and the Harlem experience has been taken to a whole new level, as A Christmas in Harlem Part 4 is being held in Threatt’s own gorgeous brand new venue, the Jive Supper Club and Lounge, located in the newly renovated Plaza Mayor at the Crossroads.
Threatt (also known by many as Mr. Midtown) and company have worked tirelessly to get the Jive Supper Club and Lounge up and running. A Christmas in Harlem will be the first full fledged event held in the beautifully crafted new facility, designed to cater to the grown and sexy. David has included different local and regional artists each year, each embracing the Harlem theme in their own unique way, while staying true to the spirit embodied by Duke, Dizzy, Ella and other greats from days gone by. This year is no exception, as live music for the 1920’s Harlem themed event will be provided by a live band featuring Brandee. Spoken word artist and activist Grace Franklin (known these days as one of the leading voices of OKC Artists for Justice), a long-time collaborator with Threatt going back to the Vine Open Mic Night days at Urban Roots, will be doing the hosting honors at this years event. If you know Grace, you know a Christmas in Harlem is about to be lit!
