6LACK Debut Shows R&B Is Still Honest

6LACK Debut Shows R&B Is Still Honest

2016 has been a year full of excellence in storytelling through music, and breakout R&B phenom 6LACK has been no exception. His debut album “Free 6LACK” captures his personal journey through relationships, his rough come up, and his handling of success. Like a lot of popular R&B of the past couple years, his sound has a dark edge to it throughout most of the project. While he is able to capitalize on this trend and generate a widely appealing sound, he maintains authenticity and depth.

The first two singles, “PRBLMS” and “Ex Calling”, received significant acclaim on streaming platforms and radio alike. This is especially unique for “Ex Calling”, because the beat is borrowed from Atlanta superstar Future’s song “Perkys Calling” from his Purple Reign mixtape. Being an Atlanta native himself and an artist who thrives on heavy trap/hip-hop beats, the union of 6LACK’s vocal talent and the uptempo instrumental produced by Southside was natural and bound to make a hit record. Moments in music like these are indicative of the connected times we live in, proving that the sharing of information advances the vehicles which cultivate creativity.

Sonically, the album has a quality of weight and mood that cannot be overstated. 6LACK’s sound is characterized by a soulful whine on of top beats that are a true signature of the setting in his physical space and time. This formula of using primarily trap drums and ultra resonant emotional soundscapes underneath fresh vocal talent has propelled many artists to near-over-night success. The twist we see in 6LACK is his diversity in the way the album’s beats are implemented, coupled with his unique voice which bears no resemblance to any other artist in his field. The foundation of his discography has been set with real ingenuity of sound and a successful display of pop appeal. His debut album is currently available on Apple Music to stream and download.
